AFTER THEY’D carried Joe’s bags into the house, Shane and Joe sat in the parlor and drank beer while discussing the incidental things two people who don’t know each other that well talk about just to pass the time. Finally Shane brought up the plans for the next day, and Joe said that was fine, that he’d like to meet Shane’s parents.

“You’ll like my daddy,” Shane said. “My mama…. She means well, but you’ll have to take her with a grain of salt. I think she’d rather have me married and raisin’ kids than bull ridin’, and she’ll tell you about that.”

Joe smiled. “Yeah, I suppose she wants grandkids. Nothing wrong with that.”

“No, there isn’t. Your mama keep on you like mine does?”

“My mother died before I moved to Texas.”

“Oh. I’m sorry.”

Joe shook his head. “Yeah, it was a shock.”

Shane watched Joe slightly lower his head. “Well, anyway…,” he said, wanting to turn the conversation to something more, well, he thought happy was what he’d shoot for. “We can go to the Yellow Rose tonight.”

“Good,” Joe said, nodding. “Will Wanda be there?”

“Oh hell,” Shane laughed. “She’s always there. I’ll keep her off you this time.”

“Okay.”

“Unless you want her on you,” Shane added, anxious to see what Joe’s reply would be.

“No, I really don’t.”

“Good deal,” Shane said, wondering again for the hundredth time if Joe had ever wanted a girl on him. “Well…,” he said, looking absently around the room. “I cleared a shelf in the bathroom cabinet for your things,” he said, walking into his bedroom and grabbing a set of sheets and a pillow he’d laid on his bed. “You can hang your clothes in my closet. It’s a small one, but we can make do, I think. Your underwear and stuff,” he said, standing in the bedroom doorway, “can go in that little side table.” He nodded toward the two-drawer table that stood next to the end of the couch.

“That’ll be fine,” Joe said, taking the sheets from him. “I’ll make my bed up when we get back from the bar.”
